My pregnancy chronicles: 2.Twins not twins!
Withholding all the butterflies in my tummy, we head towards the clinic my husband(Dr J) works at for a confirmatory scan. After a quick chat with the doctor- in- charge(Dr G) on my finding the previous day, I lay down on the examination bed and watch the screen eagerly as Dr G begins scanning. "Ahaa there it is!" claims Dr G. She went on saying further "there's the gestational sacs with measurements correlating to 5 weeks of pregnancy and then the heartbeat, she pauses for a minute, enlarging the image, my heart was racing as I stare at her face, she shook her head and looked at Dr J as she disappointly say "why do these kind of peculiarities always happen to doctor couples?". She then revealed that one of the gestational sac was disfigured and she was unable to detect the heartbeat however the other sac and conception looks perfectly fine. She then referred me to an O&G specialist at Gleneagles for a transvaginal ultrasound scheduled for the next day for a clearer view(my Birthday! *cries*). All kind of thoughts runs through my head as we drive back home especially the thought of threatened abortion frightened me. My mother and mother-in-law both have had lost their first 'baby'; a stillbirth and a miscarriage. What if I were to experience the same? Loss of baby at any stage of a pregnancy is equally miserable even if its just a day. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I ponder upon it. I prayed and hoped for the best thing to happen as I'm aware that fetal demise is better to happen in early pregnancy than later as it poses higher risk as pregnancy progresses and only the best would survive. I did secretly hope somehow miraculously I'll get to see and hear two heartbeats in the scan tomorrow.
The idea of having twins always excited me, I believe many fancy the same and when I discovered about my twin pregnancy I was super-thrilled and overjoyed but never did I expect this. I was disappointed and really worried of the forthcoming. I have to endure another night before I get an answer to all my doubts.
Got to wait and see what's in store for me...
Note:
-Fetal heartbeat is usually identified at 6th to 7th week therefore first scan is ideally done at around that time. However, with the advancements in medical technologies and expertice, its possible to recognise fetal heartbeat earlier in some circumstances.
-There are two options available for a pregnancy ultrasound:
1.Transabdominal: most common and routinely done where the transducer is placed on the tummy(lower abdomen).
2.Transvaginal ultrasound: is opted for when a more detailed view of the female reproductive organ is required. The tranducer is inserted through the vagina for an internal examination. It is the best option to determine an early pregnancy and is helpful in diagnosing various conditions eg: a possible miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy or a cyst. It gives the best visualisation of the cervix and therefore could determine any abnormalities.
(Cervix has specific changes during pregnancy or miscarriage.)
